The Golden Corner of Upper South Carolina
Three large lakes are located in the “Golden Corner” of upstate South Carolina, Lake Keowee, Lake Jocassee and Lake Hartwell. Surrounded by 11,000 acres of public recreational land, the area offers great fishing, boating, swimming, camping, hiking and canoeing. Lake Keowee is 18,500 acres of pristine water. Duke Power provides six boat access areas on Lake Keowee. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, it offers majestic mountain views as well as cold lake water. Lake Jocassee is a 7500 acre mountain lake of great beauty. There are eleven state parks and many golf courses in upstate South Carolina. Lake Hartwell is one of the most accessible lakes, less than two hours from Atlanta, and offers 962 miles of shoreline and 56,000 acres with 80 public access and recreation areas. There are two million acres of national forests and mountains within one hour of Lake Hartwell. Lakes are not the only attraction as the golden corner also includes the Chattooga River, famous for whitewater rafting, canoeing and kayaking. Sumter National Forest also offers many recreational activities. The 100 mile long “Foothills Trail” from Table Rock State Park extends to Sassafras Mountain, the highest peak in South Carolina and offers breathtaking views of the lakes and mountains. |
